Folliculitis is the infection and inflammation of one or more hair follicles. The condition may occur anywhere on the skin with the exception of the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. They may appear as red dots that come to white tips on the chest, back, arms, legs, and head.

Folliculitis starts when hair follicles are damaged by rubing from clothing, blockage of the follicle, or shaving. Most of the time, the damaged follicles become infected with Staphylococcus (staph) bacteria.
The average person has 5 million hairs. Hair grows all over your body except on your lips, palms, and the soles of your feet. It takes about a month for healthy hair to grow half an inch. Most hairs grow for up to six years and then fall out. New hairs grow in their place.
Hair helps keep you warm. It also protects your eyes, ears and nose from small particles in the air. Common problem with the hair and scalp include hair loss, infections, and flaking.
Causes
Most carbuncles, furuncles, and other cases of folliculitis develop from Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Iron deficiency anemia – associated with chronic cases.
Fungal
Tinea barbae – Caused by Fungus T. rubrum.
Malassezia folliculitis, Pityrosporum folliculitis – Caused by yeasts genus Malassezia.
Bacterial
Hot-tub folliculitis – Caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Sycosis vulgaris,- Caused by staphylococcus.
Gram-negative folliculitis – after prolonged acne treatment with antibiotics.
Viral
Herpetic folliculitis – Caused by Herpes Simplex Virus infection.
Non-infectious
Pseudofolliculitis barbae
Eosinophilic folliculitis – impaired immune systems.
