They are typically defined as tumors whose behavior are driven by mutations in the KIT or platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRA) gene mutations, and may or may not stain positively for Kit.

Signs and symptoms:

Trouble swallowing
Gastrointestinal hemorrhage
Metastases (mainly in the liver) Intestinal obstruction
Abdominal pain or discomfort
The definitive diagnosis is made with a biopsy.
